With a rumble of engines and the scream of the winch, our hero watches daylight rush upwards as he descends into the earth, never knowing if he’s going to make the trip back up. Sacrifice. Hardship. Courage. Extraordinary qualities for some, they are our miner’s daily companions. Yet, the perseverance of these mavericks fueled the American industrial revolution from 5,000 feet inside the earth. Rising above Butte,The Orphan Girl oversees the lives of men and the story of the Mile High City unfold. Her story melds the legacy, heritage, and innovation of Butte’s past, with future entrepreneurial enterprise and success.
Tied to the whims of industry and market, Butte, like so many before her, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, felt the harsh reality as the country moved away from industry. Butte, built for 100,000, where fortunes were made and roots were laid, was left to grow old as the mines fell silent. After 1950, 70% of the city’s population moved away and the Historic Uptown’s environment suffered from vacancy and disinvestment. Now, with Headframe Spirits and Chisel Industries, Butte’s pioneer spirit will once again bring focus and industry to the Richest Hill on Earth.
Presented in the short film, The Orphan Girl, the narrative follows Butte’s intrepid miners, showing the sacrifices and hardships they faced every day and highlighting how the grit and perseverance of these mavericks fueled America from a mile under the Earth.
Co-produced by Montana’s Entrepreneurs of the Year and owners of Headframe Spirits, John and Courtney McKee, The Orphan Girl is the first step to bringing Butte back to glory. John and Courtney are active participants in the economic development of Butte, and are committed to giving back to their community. Four years ago they started their business and named it Headframe Spirits an homage to the steel giants that still stand over Butte. They now operate two distilleries in Butte, with plans to break ground on the 3rd in 2015, making Headframe Spirits the largest distillery west of the Mississippi and providing hundreds of job opportunities to the Butte community.
