Original MT 287 followed modern US 287 from West Yellowstone up to Choteau and then continued to the Canadian Border at Piegan along with US 89, replacing MT 1 and MT 33 A 1959 earthquake caused a rock slide that closed the route north of Hebgen Lake, and it was re-routed south of Hutchins Ranch through Reynold's Pass.
